Ohio board formed in Columbus
by Michael Radice
A statewide gay and lesbian political action and communication association was the product of the cooperative efforts of more than 70 Ohio activists who spent the weekend brainstorming solutions to help acquire human and civil rights for Ohio's gay and lesbian community. The event was jointly facilitated and sponsored by gay and lesbian organizations in Columbus and Cleveland.
The purposes of the association are to:
• Enact a gay and lesbian civil right ordinance for the state.
• Provide a lobbyist to influence gay-andlesbian-sensitive legislation.
• Provide a library of political information that activists statewide could access. •Provide a consultant service to help enable gays and lesbians living in smaller cities to organize and pursue. their civil rights at the local level.
To ensure the efficient implementation of the statewide association, a board of 25 Ohio gays and lesbians, five from each of five regions of the state, was formed.
The association has filed incorporation papers in Columbus to ensure its legal status. It has also applied for a $50,000 grant from the Phillip Morris Foundation to enable it to hire staff and establish an office.
Opinions on the purpose and activities of the board are welcome, and can be submitted by contacting any of the northeast Ohio members. Northeast Ohio Board Members are: Dolores Noll of Kent; Al Tretheway of Cleveland; Vince Moratz of Akron; Paul Schwitzgebel of Canton; and Mike Radice of Cleveland.▼

As of this report the most entertaining rumor has it that the "Freedom Caravan" out of Los Angeles will be led by Madonna's road-tour bus. That rumor has not been confirmed but reportedly the entertainer is being asked to attend.
According to McBride, local police are standing by to assist demonstrators in any way they can and are supportive of both the marches and block party.
"We're looking forward to a positive and fun event," one organizer said.▼
